Breckenridge, Colorado, is famous for its ski resort, but summer and fall bring some of the best hiking in the Rocky Mountains. From gentle lake trails to bucket-list fourteeners, here are some of the best hikes near Breckenridge, plus where to refuel afterward. For more ways to spend the day, see our guide to things to do in Breckenridge.

Quandary Peak

A classic Colorado fourteener at 14,265 feet, Quandary Peak is strenuous but non-technical, with about 6.75 miles roundtrip and huge summit views of the Tenmile Range and Continental Divide. Note that Breckenridge uses a required offsite parking reservation and shuttle system for Quandary and McCullough Gulch during peak season, so check current details before you go.

McCullough Gulch Trail

A moderate hike to shimmering alpine lakes and cascading waterfalls, McCullough Gulch is around 2.5 miles roundtrip to Upper Blue Lake. It packs a lot of scenery into a shorter outing, making it a favorite for a half-day adventure.

Mohawk Lakes Trail

One of the area’s most beloved hikes, the Mohawk Lakes Trail climbs past waterfalls and old mining relics to Lower and Upper Mohawk Lakes, roughly 6.7 miles roundtrip to the upper lake, with high-alpine scenery the whole way.

Boreas Pass

An easy-to-moderate trail along an old railroad bed, Boreas Pass mixes history with scenery, passing Baker’s Tank and offering wide views of the Mosquito Range. It is family-friendly and great for a relaxed day out.

French Gulch and Peak 10

For mining history, French Gulch winds past old cabins and the Minnie Mine on a gentler grade. For a serious challenge, the Peak 10 Trail climbs rocky switchbacks to a 13,640-foot summit with panoramic views. Other worthwhile options include the Crystal Lakes, Wheeler Lakes, Spruce Creek, and Lily Pad Lake trails.

Refuel at Tin Plate

After a day on the trail, there is no better reward than a good meal. Tin Plate Pizza, in the heart of Breckenridge, serves 72-hour sourdough pizza with locally sourced ingredients, plus salads, craft beer, and house cocktails in a warm, rustic room. Gluten-free options are available too. Walk in, no reservations needed, and browse the Tin Plate menu.
